Brew: Graveyard Mist Tea Review

Graveyard Mist is a blend from the indie tea blender 52Teas.

It is one of my favorite blends of all time. There’s just something about it that I adore. It’s an acquired taste, admittedly at first I didn’t quite know what to make of the unique flavors, but when it clicks, it clicks, and you will be craving this tea for all time.

“Part Chinese sencha, part Yun Wu (Cloud Mist), with marshmallow root, spearmint and natural marshmallow, spearmint and a hint of malt flavors, this is a smooth, silky experience with the sweet pique of spearmint subdued and made ghost-like–subtle, but haunting.”

The first thing you’ll smell is the spearmint, but the first taste is the sweetness of marshmallow that morphs to the slight bitterness of the green teas, and finishes off with the fresh sensation of mint, though not the taste of mint. It is rather odd to smell the spearmint but not taste it, but there it is!

The downside is, despite the low steeping time (2 minutes), the tea does not taste the same on the second steeping. By the second steeping, the marshmallow sweetness is all but gone and you have a mix of green and spearmint. Without that malty marshmallow to balance out the other two teas, it ends up an odd-tasting brew in all the wrong ways. In that aspect, the cost of each cup or pot will go up.

The smell is fascinating. One of my favorite things to do when I have a cup is smell the tea before I brew. It smells amazing! All of the individual flavors mingle into something I wish I could bottle and spray my home with.

I usually have this tea in the morning during working hours. The unique taste helps perk me up in the morning and get my mind going. It would also be a lovely tea served in the evening. Because of the flavor profile, it is a difficult tea to pair. Fruit would pair best with the tea because of their mild sweetness, but a buttery sweet such as a cookie would not pair well. This is definitely a hot tea; it loses some of its charm when iced.

The packaging is very simple and no-nonsense. Because it is an indie vendor, you’re not going to find the fancy containers or graphic design. It adds to its charm! You are really getting a sense of “This is made by a person with a passion for tea and a creative culinary spirit”. Much like the hole-in-the-wall restaurants, you’ll find great teas made by a passionate blender with 52 Teas. My order came with a handwritten note and a piece of candy. They also threw in an extra sample bag. Nice!
